For many types of taxable income, the general rule is the receipt principle: the relevant date is not necessarily the invoice, settlement or accrual date, but when the income is considered received for tax purposes.
The recorded date can matter for assigning income to a tax year. Foreign Income FX also uses it as the reference for your selected rate method. Instead of converting an annual total at one rate, each receipt is documented separately.
The relevant receipt date may affect which tax year an amount belongs to.
The same date determines the reference period for ECB daily or BMF monthly rates in the tool.
Note: Section 11 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) includes exceptions and special rules. The applicable rule and date depend on the income type and individual circumstances. Foreign Income FX does not make this tax assessment. Section 11 EStG (official German law) ↗
You choose the rate method. The tool records the date, method, source and EUR result together.
The tool does not silently select a tax method. The appropriate method depends on the tax situation; your records show which basis you used. View methodology & sources →
Foreign Income FX does not provide tax advice or determine which method is legally required for your individual circumstances.
Date-specific reference rates with a traceable fallback to a preceding available business day.
Published historical data for 2010–2025 available offline; current data can be retrieved when needed.
Document your own rate source and rationale rather than saving a number without provenance.
Your receipt and project data are processed locally in your browser. Online rate lookups transmit only the technical rate parameters required. Read more about official sources and rate selection in our methodology guide.

✓ You have multiple receipts in USD, GBP, INR, CHF or other foreign currencies.
✓ You do not want to assemble each payment and rate source manually in Excel.
✓ You want to trace the rate and method used for every receipt later.
✓ You need a clean FX record, not an entire cloud-based tax platform.
I originally built Foreign Income FX for myself. With several sources of foreign income in different currencies, what seemed like a simple conversion quickly became repetitive work: collecting receipts, finding the relevant exchange rates, converting amounts and keeping a traceable record.
Of course, you could build your own Excel spreadsheet. I wanted a focused tool for exactly this workflow – no account, no uploading financial entries, and traceable exchange-rate sources.
That personal tool became Foreign Income FX. I turned the reusable part into a standalone product.
