BMF exchange rates: find monthly rates and convert to EUR
Find the published German Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) monthly VAT exchange rate for a year, month and currency, and convert your amount directly into EUR.
Calculate with a BMF rate
Enter an amount and select a currency, month and year. The result includes the applied BMF rate and its official source.
What are BMF exchange rates?
The German Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) publishes official monthly VAT exchange rates. Under Section 16(6) of the German VAT Act (UStG), certain foreign-currency amounts used to calculate VAT and deductible input VAT are generally converted into EUR using the publicly announced average rate for the relevant month.
The published figures are based on average rates determined by the Deutsche Bundesbank. BMF normally publishes each monthly rate at the beginning of the following month. The current year is updated as new months become available; annual tables are provided for completed years.
When are BMF monthly rates used?
The distinction matters: BMF explicitly publishes these rates as VAT exchange rates. For VAT, Section 16(6) UStG generally provides for the officially published average exchange rates of the relevant month.
Which rate applies to your situation? This page focuses on BMF monthly rates. For the distinction between different exchange-rate methods, see our exchange-rate guide.
Which month should you select?
BMF rates are published for a specific month. For a traceable calculation, keep the year, month, currency and published monthly rate together.
The relevant month depends on the tax circumstances. Section 16(6) UStG contains specific VAT rules. Different rules may apply to other taxes.
If you are unsure whether a BMF monthly rate or another method applies, see our exchange-rate guide. This calculator focuses on finding and applying the published BMF monthly rates.
How is a BMF rate used to convert to EUR?
For many currencies, the published BMF rate is expressed as foreign-currency units per 1 EUR . In this case, divide the foreign-currency amount by the published rate.
This example illustrates the formula only. For an actual calculation, use the published BMF rate for the applicable month and year above.
The calculator applies the correct conversion direction and shows the rate and source, so you do not need to work out whether to multiply or divide.
BMF exchange rates for 2026 and previous years
BMF open data provides VAT exchange rates since 2010. The current-year dataset is updated monthly, and full-year tables are available for completed years.
Select any of these years in the calculator above. Currency availability depends on the official dataset for the selected year.

For one amount, the calculator above may be all you need. For 20, 50 or 200 foreign-currency receipts, tracking dates, currencies, rate methods and EUR values manually can quickly become cumbersome.
Entries and calculations are processed locally in your browser. The calculator may fetch current rate data online, but your financial entries are not sent to the rate service for conversion.
